The Cutting Edge

When starting up a new business it can be hard to get the technology balance right. While it is necessary to invest, often quite heavily, in the technological infrastructure, it is also necessary at the same time to control your spending as funds are often tight at the beginning.

Technology needs in a business can range from 0845 numbers to a new computer network to an internet site to a telephone system. Set up costs can be very high and can be one of the most expensive parts of setting up your business.

If you scrimp on the technology at this early stage you face the risk of underinvestment and it will not be able to support your business in the way that it should, but if you go the other way then large parts of the system might be underused in the early days and become obsolete very quickly.

In any case it is difficult to know in the very beginning how your business will develop and implementing new technology on a large scale in the very beginning might not be a good idea as your business may take a slightly different path than expected.

Try to look for scalable and modular solutions which will allow your business to grow whilst retaining the flexibility needed to service your requirements.
