The home of technology reviews:

A Passion for Technology

So, you love technology and you avidly spend your evenings and weekends reading up on the latest developments in the field of technology.

You are even a dab hand at the practical stuff like building your own computer from scratch and setting up your own home network? But does this mean that you would be cut out to do Network Engineer jobs or other jobs in the industry?

Many people assume that because they are a good amateur, this automatically means that they can do it professionally and while this is the case with some people, many people who want to make it into a career are just not capable and certainly not qualified. (more...)

Using the Internet to Buy Insurance

Buying insurance has always been something of a minefield. Every insurer advertises their product as the best and least expensive, but we know that this cannot be the case. Purchasing wisely has become a matter of sifting through masses of promotional content and trying to evaluate which policy is best suited to your needs.

There are so many extended insurance adverts out there that reading it all often becomes confusing and disorientating. Online content in particular is difficult to plough through and prospective policy buyers ultimately get the impression they have read the same thing several different times.

It is possible though, to use the internet to your advantage when buying insurance. Instead of trying to read volumes of promotional insurance writing, turn your attention to comparison sites and house and car insurance rate tracker. (more...)

Improvements in Dentistry

For a lot of people, going to the dentist remains an experience clouded by a terrible sense of dread. The sights, sounds and smells of the surgery are the objects of real phobias, and many of these develop from exposure to questionable dentistry during childhood.

A few decades ago, dentistry was a very different school of medicine. Dental practitioners operated according to a different set of rules, and saw certain things that we frown upon today as being perfectly acceptable.

It is important to note, however, that as science and technology have improved over the years, so dentistry has become better too. All over the UK, dentists York based or London-based, and Edinburgh-based, are adopting new methods to make for more effective, less painful and even greener surgery. (more...)

Sell your House Online

Selling your house can be a difficult business, fraught with hidden estate agent costs and the expenses incurred before sale-renovations. However, like so many other processes, house sales have become increasingly easier with the effulgence of the internet. There are numerous online estate agents out there and most of them operate in a similar way. Sellers simply pay a set fee, and their home appears on the realtor’s site. Indeed, it has become very popular to Sell your home online and virtual real estate is a booming business.

As with a traditional house sale, however, it will be necessary for you to host open house days in which prospective buyers come to investigate the property. In preparation for these it is important that you, under the guidance of the estate agent, make some crucial preparations.

Of course, all of the obvious tasks will need to be performed. The house must be spotlessly clean, with fresh linen on all of the beds. Cushions need to be straight and kitchen surfaces sparkling. In short, you need to create the impression that while your home is comfortable to live, you do not actually live there at the moment. (more...)

An Invasion of Privacy

Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking technology, on the contrary, but it has got so much harder in the last few years to actually escape when you want to and take some time out.

When you go on holiday, your company expects you to touch base through your blackberry or laptop and the last couple of years at my old job saw me logging on every day of my holidays to answer questions which could not wait until I returned to the office.

While this makes many people think that they are indispensable, it is in fact just that the boundaries are being pushed further and further, all in the name of technology – after all if you were really not able to make contact they would cope, wouldn't they? By keeping in contact during your holiday you do not get the break that you need and often return just as frazzled as when you left. (more...)

A World Apart

When you compare the modern day video games to what we used to enjoy even a few short years back there is simply no comparison in the quality of the images and the huge range of features which we can now play with.

The quality is so good, and the images so life-like, that you can easily immerse yourself in the game and forget about the real world as you plunge headlong into the most dangerous situations – the ultimate fantasy.

They are so life-like now that they are a near perfect simulation of life – but not life as we know it as it takes us completely outside of your normal everyday existence. We can fly planes to any city of the world and land in real life airports that are a true representation of the real ones. We can battle monsters and dinosaurs that died out millions of years ago, but seem like they are totally real. (more...)

How Good Can it Get?

We used to be thankful for the good old video recorder – can you still remember them? You know, the tapes which lasted an hour or two, which often used to cut off the end of the film you really wanted to tape if it was not long enough, the ones which used to chew up the ribbon wrecking your happy moments forever.

Then we found the joys of DVD and the benefits were numerous. A much longer capacity so that you could fit so much onto one small disc, and they were much tougher than their predecessors. Quality was also vastly improved over the old tapes.

Then came blu-ray which though it looks like a regular DVD, is superior in quality with a high definition image. (more...)

Advance in Technology

Cameras have certainly come a long way since the pin hole camera was invented so many years ago. The seventies saw the highly popular instant camera where the photo came out straightaway and then developed in front of your eyes and then the type of cameras which many of us used as young adults, the good old roll of film which had to be taken down to the local chemist to be developed.

Now of course we have the digital camera which has totally changed the way we take our photographs.

Firstly they do not have to be developed, you can just download them onto the computer which means that you can take as many photos as you like without wasting the old style film. You can edit and change your photos using special software and even use special effects such as blurring or Andy Warhol style effects. (more...)

Keep Fit and Have Fun

One of the most fun developments to my fitness regime in recent years has been the release of the fitness workout DVD, a staple ingredient of many working women's fitness schedule. What is there not to like about it? You can do it in the warmth of your own home, you don't have to dress up for the gym and you can make a real fool of yourself without anyone seeing.

Even better has been the radical and totally new way of keeping fit – using a games console. If you have not seen it before you can exercise in front of your games console to a specially designed fitness game. The amazing thing is the games console has sensors and a camera so that it can detect your movements and tailor your workout programme accordingly.

It is great fun and is so motivational for people of any age. You can encourage the kids to keep fit instead of just playing console games on the sofa, and the whole family can enjoy themselves together. (more...)

Finding a Careful Removal Company

When you are selecting a great removal company UK, France, you need to find one that you are certain will take adequate care of your more delicate furnishings and appliances. While removal disasters are fewer and further between today than they used to be in the past, sending your things overseas is still a business that involves certain risks.

Finding the ideal movers for you is simply a matter of research. To begin with, ask amongst your friends and family to see if anyone close to you can recommend a careful removal company who won't destroy all your sensitive electronic equipment.

If this is unsuccessful, go online and conduct a simple search. Once you've narrowed your options down to a few possibilities, refine these still further by reading through any consumer reviews of their work that you can find. Enter the best looking options into an online comparison generator in order to get a clear picture of what you're getting for your money in each case. (more...)

Taking Out a Sim Only Contract

For a lot of people, the money shelled out at the start of a new cell phone contract is an unnecessary outlay of cash. If your phone from a previous contract is still perfectly functional then forking out for another handset does not seem to be all that reasonable.

In today's financial climate, more and more people are curbing their spending and limiting the amount of money that goes unnecessarily out of their bank accounts. Indeed, many are opting to retain older handsets and to purchase sim only contracts instead of the more traditional all-inclusive deals.

A sim only contract provides cell phone users with a sim card and a specified amount of talk time, but with no handset. The result of this paring down is a great reduction in price. Sim only contracts are by far cheaper than those which come complete with a new handset. (more...)

Research and Development

The current economic situation seems to have had little effect on the research and development of technology for the consumer electronics market. New and innovative devices seem to be released left, right and centre, from the Apple iPad to 3D tv sets and more besides.

Part of the reason for this, is of course that the research behind - for example 3D technology - is a decade or more old. With the research mainly done, the manufacturers were waiting for component costs to be reduced to a level where they became affordable to the average householder. When this happened, 3D TV sets could be released to the general market.

Releasing the sets was only one side of the coin though. It took some brave filmmakers and film companies to start filming movies in 3D, so that media would eventually be available. The amazing success of Avatar showed what was possible, and this film has quite possibly done for 3D what The Matrix did for DVD in terms of making a format seem appealing. (more...)

The Cutting Edge

When starting up a new business it can be hard to get the technology balance right. While it is necessary to invest, often quite heavily, in the technological infrastructure, it is also necessary at the same time to control your spending as funds are often tight at the beginning.

Technology needs in a business can range from 0845 numbers to a new computer network to an internet site to a telephone system. Set up costs can be very high and can be one of the most expensive parts of setting up your business.

If you scrimp on the technology at this early stage you face the risk of underinvestment and it will not be able to support your business in the way that it should, but if you go the other way then large parts of the system might be underused in the early days and become obsolete very quickly. (more...)

The Trick of Technology

Many people are quite simply baffled by much of the latest technology and often feel quite overwhelmed by it. Unless you are in the industry or follow it avidly in your spare time then it can seem like a total mystery with its own terminology and its fast changing pace.

The trick is to try to understand what technology is relevant to your life and only learn on a need to know basis. That way you will only have to master those parts which will actively benefit your life or to make it easier.

What do I mean by this? Simply, only aim to understand those nuggets of technology which will enhance your daily life and this can be anything from 0845 numbers to email to the iPad. (more...)

Portable Gadgets

The internet has become something we carry with us wherever we go. No longer accessible only from certain locations in the office and home environment, it lives in our pockets, our handbags and our school satchels.

Whether they connect us to games like the shoot em up raze 2 or simply helps us develop networks with new people, the various electronic devices we carry throughout the day keep the furthest corners of the world within reach.

There is a wide variety of electronic internet-enabled devices to choose from, and each one suits a certain set of requirements. The most ordinary of these is, of course, the mobile phone, which has, over time, morphed into a multi-functional mini computer. (more...)

Technology and the Home

Whether you live in Leeds, Yorkshire or New York, New York, your home could be turned into a fully automated, multi-functional haven of electronics and technology. With the right amount of money, you can buy a fridge that talks to you, lights that know when you want them to turn off and curtains which close as soon as it gets dark.

This kind of intelligent house is becoming increasingly common as people load up on technology in every room. Your kitchen could, for example, boast a wide selection of appliances that come complete with internet connectivity.

The bathroom – domain of steam and water and thus not the first place most of us would look for electronic gadgets – might be kitted out with a multi-purpose shower that is at once a sauna and massager as well. In addition, you might install an air dry system to replace those old, outdated towels! (more...)

Selecting a Handset

If you aren't a technological whiz, you may have trouble navigating the wide selection of electronic products on the market today. In particular, you are likely to find that choosing a mobile handset is a problem; with so much variety and such a wide range of different functions available to you, it's easy to feel a little overwhelmed. However, as long as you follow a few useful guidelines, you'll see that the process is far from impossible.

To begin with, it's a good idea to assess your mobile needs before you go into the shop. Sit down ad consider exactly what you use your handset for. Make a list of the functions you think are indispensable in your daily life. Start with the most important and rank down from there to those you think are negligible.

Next, get online and browse through your service provider's catalogue. This will give you a good impression of what is available to you and what kind of price you're looking at. Try to work out an idea of how much you'd like to spend on your contract every month, and if you can't find the ideal phone to fit that price scheme – it doesn't have a digital camera for example – be prepared to be a little flexible. Purchasing A Digital Camera

In the current era we are literally inundated with technology. New products with enhanced capabilities appear every second day – or so it seems – and as a result, selecting the right model for your own requirements can be difficult.

The apparently simple process of choosing a digital camera, for example, has become something of a fiasco. With such a wide range of variations available, it is almost impossible to tell, without help, whether you want a Kodak Easyshare or something completely different.

There is no easy answer to this conundrum. Unless you happen to be a technology wizard, it is always going to be hard to choose an expensive electronic product. The best you can do to help yourself out is simply to research the market before you head to the shops. (more...)

How Can An Office Network Benefit You?

There are a variety of different companies offering network cabling services throughout the UK. However, you might be unsure as to how you can benefit from an office network: that's why we've put this article together to help you make the right decision.

It will reduce cost. Back in the day, each computer in an office would have had to have had it’s own printer, scanner, modem and the like. With an installed network, everyone in the office can share the peripherals. Not only is this a great economical choice, it's a good excuse for everyone to have a chinwag around the printer!

It can keep your data safe. There is a big danger in data being kept on discs/flash drives and the like in that they can be lost or potentially stolen (just ask the Home Office if you don’t believe us). An office network will mean that your data can all be stored in the one place without ever having to be put at potential risk. (more...)

IT Training Programmes to Suit Your Needs

Information technology, more commonly known as IT is the gathering and distribution of information either by or through the use of technical systems such as computers. Almost every organisation in our modern world makes use of computers – schools, governments and businesses depend on various forms of technology and IT in order to function.

But it is not only about simply functioning, without technology the progression or development of any of these institutions would be nearly impossible. The rate at which new technologies are being developed and released makes IT Training vital to the growth of any organisation.

Integrating new electronics or technological devices into a business or organisation can be challenging. Yet without proper IT training the technological investment that you make in your organisation or company will be for nothing. (more...)

The Scope of Technology

Nowadays we think of technology in only one way. We think of it only in terms of computers or computer related items and yet technology comes in so many forms that we never think about. We are dependent on technology to such an extent that we don't really pay attention to where it comes from.

Technology is simply the manufacture, use and knowledge of machines or crafts, also known as tools. We use tools almost every day without paying much attention to them. For example think about the knife, fork and spoon that you use with all your meals. These are a form of technology.

Other forms of technology which we are surrounded by all the time require a bit more electricity in order to run. A personal computer must be plugged in at all times in order to function, much like a printer, even if they use canon ink cartridges. (more...)

Sport Must be in HD

The place that HD has really changed TV viewing is in sport. Most people can live with low definition TV. Seeing a higher definition version of EastEnders is not really that important. However, tuning into the football match on your sky HD box makes a world of difference.

Many television programmes were not even supposed to be viewed with definition. By it's very nature, TV was made to be on a smaller screen. In the past, the draw of TV has been it's close angles and intimate storytelling. It originally was contrasted to the movie theatre with it's vast screen giving a sense of space and grandeur.

However, sport has always been about being a spectator. People can listen to sport on the radio, they can read about it in the newspaper, they could watch it on TV in low definition - they could do all these. There is no question that sport is phenomenally better in HD. (more...)

How Can Reversing Cameras Benefit You?

One of the most important aspects of running a large firm based around logistics is to ensure that your vehicles are kept as safe as possible. A good way to do this is to invest in reversing cameras , but if you’re unsure as to whether they can really work for you, this guide on their benefits should help:

Firstly, reversing cameras can be very useful if you regularly use vehicles in built up metropolitan areas. These environments usually offer up plenty of different potential hazards such as pedestrians, bins, other vehicles and even lampposts and the like. Having a high quality reversing camera can help you and your drivers avoid accidental damage to the vehicle itself.

Secondly, one of the hazards of driving larger vehicles is that there is usually at least one ‘blind spot’ around the exterior of the vehicle, that the driver is completely unable to see. Having a high quality reversing camera will stop this being the case, with the vehicle’s driver able to see every exterior angle around the vehicle – the far safer option. (more...)

The Benefits of School Payments

If you’re a parent, then the chances are you’re always seeking new ways in which you can save yourself both time and effort in managing the finances that are needed to help get your kids through school and fed at lunchtime. One of the more unique recent technological advancements in the last few years is electronic school payments : the ability for children to pay for their meals, trips, etc, electronically. As you might imagine, there are some serious benefits to this, including:

It increases the financial convenience. Most parents – often having to run homes as well – will sort out their financial situations so that bills and the like all leave the family account monthly, or alternately with each other. Having this sense of order and structure makes things easier to manage, and paying school payments electronically allows them to be organised alongside everything else. This prevents them from being an additional payment that has to be worried about.

Secondly, it’s a far more safe option in terms of ensuring the money is used for what it should be. Whilst we were all young once, it’s sometimes easy to forget that when it comes to cold, hard cash, kids can be rather forgetful and unorganised. Of course there’s also the slight risk of the Kevin and Perry situation (bigger boys took it). To ensure that the dinner money goes on nothing but dinner, electronic school payments are without doubt the safest (and most sensible) choice. (more...)
